Programme Aims and Learning Outcomes
The Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Programme in English Studies for the Professions (BAESP) aims to nurture and develop students with the abilities/attributes they will need to become competent English language professionals and responsible global citizens in the 21st century. At the professional level, the programme aims to produce graduates with a) a high level of competence in English, b) a sound understanding of the theoretical disciplines underlying applied English language studies and the integrated use of languages concerned, and c) a strong ability to apply their knowledge and generic linguistic skills in a variety of professional communication contexts.
The programme equips graduates with professional/academic knowledge and skills as well as attributes for all-roundedness in an integrated manner. The programme aims to produce graduates
- who possess a high level of professional communicative competence in English;
- who have a firm grounding in language studies which can be critically and creatively applied in a variety of business and management contexts;
- who have an awareness and understanding of intercultural communication in multilingual settings that enhances their global outlook and cultural appreciation;
- who are able to apply their strong communication skills to solving real-world problems effectively in local and global multilingual professional/business settings;
- who are capable of exercising their judgement and developing intellectual curiosity to work both independently and as part of a team;
- who are aware of the need for and are committed to life-long learning; and
- who have the potential to become future leaders and entrepreneurs excelling in communication for professional purposes.
The programme offers students a Work-Integrated Education (WIE) placement opportunity in Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland or overseas.
Students who directly enter Year 3 based on their previous academic results in an Associate Degree/Higher Diploma programme will in principle follow the BAESP Year-3 study pattern. However, due to their special status, they may be required to follow a tailor-made progression pattern specially designed for them so that they will be able to graduate within the normal time frame. Students are provided with the progress pattern upon registration.
Students admitted to an Articulation Degree or Senior Year curriculum that is already a reduced curriculum are normally not given credit transfer for any required GUR subjects or DSR subjects within the BAESP curriculum. They must complete at least 60 credits to be eligible for the award.

General University Requirement (GUR)
The GUR for Senior Year Entry Students normally includes (1) the Language and Communication Requirement (LCR), which includes Reading Requirements in English (ER) and Chinese (CR) and Writing Requirements in English (EW) and Chinese (CW); (2) the Service-Learning Requirement, and (3) the Cluster Area Requirement (CAR), which includes a China-Related Studies Requirement.
Discipline Specific Requirement (DSR)
BAESP strives to provide students with a solid foundation in the knowledge and skills they will need to communicate effectively in English for professional and business purposes in Hong Kong and around the world, where English functions as the key lingua franca of professions and businesses. Accordingly, all subjects in the BAESP discipline-specific curriculum for Senior Year Entry students are drawn from the BAESP 4-Year curriculum. The BAESP discipline specific curriculum for Senior Year Entry students has the following components.
(1) Major Study Subjects
Major Study Subjects (30 credits) are compulsory for all BAESP Senior Year Entry Students and are organised around two themes: (a) Advanced Language Proficiency, which comprises two subjects (ENGL2003 English for Advanced Academic Writing and CBS2904 Academic & Technical Chinese Writing) for the Discipline-Specific Language Requirement (DSLR) and ENGL4001 English for Management; and (b) English in Context, which consists of 7 content subjects. These subjects are designed to provide BAESP students with a solid foundation of academic knowledge and professional skills for language professionals.
(2) Major Study Elective Subjects
Elective Subjects (minimum 15 credits), grouped into (a) Professional Communication, (b) Applied English Language Studies, and (c) Global Languages, are designed to further broaden BAESP students’ academic and professional vision and a global outlook. It should be noted that credits earned from taking subjects under Global Languages cannot contribute to the fulfillment of the 15 credits for BAESP Electives.
(3) Capstone Project for Language Studies
The Capstone Project in Language Studies (6 credits), compulsory for all BAESP students, is conducted in the final year under the supervision of ENGL academic staff. Through the Capstone Project, students' learning experience accumulated over the entire undergraduate study is consolidated in the form of a dissertation. This capstone experience helps prepare students for professional practice, further academic pursuits, future lifelong learning and the development of their generic competencies.
(4) Work-Integrated Education (WIE)
WIE (3 training credits) provides a framework for students to integrate what they learn in the classroom with what they learn in the real world, and to develop into well-rounded people with professional competence. Students typically meet the WIE requirement through completing a one-month summer internship in an organizational or a corporate context, applying the knowledge and skills they have acquired from study to the real working world. WIE assessment is based on three grades: Pass with Merit (M), Pass (P) and Failure (F). However, the subject does not contribute to the final GPA. Students can apply for a waiver of the WIE requirement if they can demonstrate the fulfilment of the requirement with relevant work experience. Students undertaking non-local WIE placements may receive partial financial subsidies from Student Advancement and Resources in the form of Offshore WIE Sponsorship (OWS).

Recognition and Prospects
The BA (Hons) in English Studies for the Professions (BAESP) is recognised by the Education Bureau of Hong Kong and its Standing Committee on Language Education and Research as an English Language Major Degree Programme that meets the Hong Kong government’s Language Proficiency Requirement. Registered students are eligible to apply for the Scholarship for Prospective English Teachers offered by the Education Bureau.
Graduates of the Department of English are successful in their careers and excel in various industries and professions in Hong Kong. Fresh graduates of BAESP find employment in media and journalism, retail, human resources, public relations, marketing and advertising, publishing, education and the civil service, where a high level of competence in English and professional communication is needed.
Some BAESP graduates proceed to further studies in Hong Kong and overseas in the fields of linguistics, applied linguistics, translation and interpreting, communication, and public and environmental policy studies.
- An Associate Degree or a Higher Diploma in a language-related discipline.
