Programme Aims and Learning Outcomes

Engineering Physics is a unique programme that focuses on the application of physics to engineering. This combination of physics with engineering enables our graduates to perform flexibly and effectively in various careers.

Students gain the ability to analyse and solve practical engineering problems, which prepares them for complex workplace situations and technological advancements.



Programme Characteristics

Engineering Physics is the only programme in Hong Kong that amalgamates applied physics and engineering. We produce versatile graduates who can comfortably cope with Hong Kong's fast-paced and multifaceted economy as it evolves into a high-tech and high value-added productivity centre.

Students benefit from training in both physics and engineering and from familiarity with sophisticated equipment, including electron microscopes, lasers, surface coating equipments and LED characterisation instruments.

Student exchange programmes with academic institutions in the Chinese mainland and overseas are available. In addition, students will perform Work-Integrated Education (WIE) in the form of short-term placements, many of which are outside PolyU.



Normally, students have to complete a minimum of 30 credits of General University Requirement (GUR) subjects and a minimum of 95 credits of Discipline Specific Requirement (DSR) subjects to fulfil the graduation requirement. However, senior year students can apply for credit transfer (up to a maximum of 60 credits) based on their previous studies in AD/HD programmes and their academic performance.

The features of the programme are as follows:

  • The key studies are basic and applied physics, strengthened by engineering subjects and computational physics. Supporting subjects include those in languages, computing, mathematics and management. Optoelectronics is the key area of the Engineering component.
  • The Physics Core Subjects cover basic physics and applied physics, which are relevant to high-technology industries.
  • Students can choose Elective Subjects such as the following:
    • Advanced Photonics Laboratory
    • Applied Acoustics
    • Computational Physics
    • Display Technology
    • Electromagnetic Fields
    • Laser Principles & Applications
    • Optical Design 
    • Radiation Physics
    • Science & Technology of Photovoltaics
    • Semiconductor Materials and Devices
    • Solid State Lighting
  • Students undertake a final year project to integrate the knowledge, aptitude and skills they have acquired.

Career Prospects

This programme produces graduates who are invariably well received by local and overseas employers. Our graduates work in a variety of areas, from research at universities to manufacturing, telecommunication and business, e.g. in consulting and analysis firms. Many of our graduates go into the booming industry in testing and certification. In addition, our graduates are in demand in the LED industry, medical engineering, the aviation industry, software development and the financial sector.

An Associate Degree in Applied Science or Engineering, or a Higher Diploma in Applied Physics, Applied Optics, Optical Technology or Engineering in relevant areas.

This programme is very effective in learning and developing our careers. It also gives us various chances to experience the workplace environment, such as internships. After studying in the Department of Applied Physics, I believe that students are trained to be responsible.

This programme gave me new perspectives on the world, from the microcosmic quantum world to the macroscopic level, Einstein’s theory of special relativity. Teachers patiently and precisely explained how things work with much scientific support and many examples from personal experience.

The knowledge I gained from here was interesting and progressive, which continuously triggered my curiosity in scientific exploration and new technologies. 

Learning physics is a process of understanding the fundamentals behind the complex world. I am sure that everyone who joins this programme will be enriched and equipped with analytical minds as well as scientific research skills. I also learned to think out of the box. Every problem has its own solution. While solving problems, I may discover something new and beyond my imagination.
