Programme Aims and Learning Outcomes
We aim to educate professional mechanical engineers who are able to apply up-to-date technology to solve and manage multidisciplinary engineering problems for various engineering/business sectors.
Upon completion of study, graduates of the programme are expected to:
Programme Characteristics
After our students have received a broad and solid foundation in areas including physics, mathematics, computing, engineering sciences, design and manufacturing, they are able to apply their knowledge and skills to certain clusters:
Students are admitted to the senior year of the 4-year degree programme. The number of credits required for graduation is 64 academic credits (plus 6 training credits)*.
* As students may need to meet specific requirements at admission, the credits required for graduation will vary according to their academic backgrounds.
The 64 academic credits consist of 9 mandatory credits of General University Requirements (GUR) and 55 credits of Discipline-Specific Requirements (DSR).
Work-Integrated Education (WIE)
To graduate, every student must complete placement training for at least 2 full weeks in a suitable organisation as fulfillment of WIE. The Department has developed opportunities for students to work in firms in Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland and abroad. These, and other forms of work experience, can count towards the WIE requirement.

Professional Recognition
The programme has been granted full accreditation by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE).
Career Prospects
Because of their broad and solid knowledge in engineering and the sciences, and their ability to apply their knowledge and skills to tackle complicated multidisciplinary engineering problems, our graduates are able to start their careers as mechanical engineers, design engineers, manufacturing and process engineers, service engineers, consultant engineers or project engineers. They can find excellent employment opportunities in the aviation and aeronautical engineering industries, public utility companies, the building services sector, engineering consultancy firms, the construction industry, the environmental, electronic and manufacturing industries, the information technology sector, government departments and educational institutions.

BEng(Hons) in Mechanical Engineering (2020 graduate) Quality Assurance Engineer II, MTR Corporation Limited
I am currently working at MTR Corporation Limited in the role of Quality Assurance Engineer II. I am in charge of the delivery of product and service assurance through adherence to a quality management system that is robust, effective, efficient and continuously improved upon when deficiencies and risks are identified throughout the project life-cycle. The ME programme was very helpful to my current job in areas such as audit and surveillance of E&M works. The course gave me a good foundation of engineering knowledge, enabling me to offer fair judgements in technical assessments. Therefore, I would like to thank the ME Department. Studying Mechanical Engineering gave me a solid understanding of engineering mathematics, mechanics and materials, thermodynamics, engineering design, manufacturing and other interesting topics. These are the fundamentals for most engineering careers, such as roles in aviation, public utilities, building services, consultancy and contracting. I have always emphasised effectiveness and efficiency when facing engineering problems. Taught by experienced and dedicated professors and teaching fellows, we become excellent problem solvers and uphold a good reputation in the industry.
Soft skills are as critical as management skills for mechanical engineers. PolyU and the ME department offer opportunities for students’ all-round development, such as overseas internships, open competitions and scholarships. I worked as a research assistant at a university in Korea, gaining insight into mixed reality and Industry 4.0, and working with international colleagues. I also participated in the ASME Student Design Competition in America and ABU Robocon in Hong Kong, equipping myself with theoretical and practical knowledge of robotics development and project management experience.
