Aims & Characteristics

Aims and Characteristics

Programme Aims

We prepare students to develop a solid foundation and discipline-specific knowledge in social sciences and social work, a repertoire of professional competence and skills, a firm commitment to social justice, ethical and social responsibilities and a humanitarian orientation. Our graduates are competent in flexibly and creatively using information, knowledge, theories and resources.

Characteristics

A strong social science foundation strengthens students’ analytical ability and familiarises them with the economic, social and cultural contexts of social problems and social work action. Theory is integrated with practice. We recognise the need to develop not just theoretical abilities and skills, but also the ability to feel, empathise and appreciate.

Student Message

Student Message

It is my greatest honor to be selected as the Outstanding Student of the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences. The journey in PolyU has transformed me in a great extent. It goes without saying that this award is a testament to my years of breakthrough and growth. It has encouraged me to continue to strive for the best! I would like to extend my immense gratitude to my family’s everlasting love, friends’ support, schoolmates’ company, teachers’ sincere guidance and PolyU’s nurture.

I value tertiary education and strongly believe in life-long learning.  I have engaged in a wide range of extra-curricular activities and study tours in PolyU, through which I have cultivated my interests of appreciating diverse culture, unearthed my potential of expressing myself and serving others, and lived a fruitful university life. To me, tertiary education is not only about qualification and grades, but also a chance to cultivate global perspective and positive attitude towards life.  And only through life-long learning, I will be able to improve my knowledge, skills and competences as a professional social worker.

Taking this golden opportunity, I would like to express my sincere and profound gratitude to the people who have accompanied me through this wonderful yet challenging journey, and to the ones who have always stood by me and shown me the greatest support. The splendid memories I had in PolyU will stay with me forever!
