Programme Aims

The BA(Hons) in Product Design (產品設計學(榮譽)文學士) programme is to prepare students for a professional career in the design and development of products and product related services. They will learn to identify and solve the problems of product design (產品設計) systematically and strategically with sensitivity to humanistic, environmental and social concerns. It will equip learners and strategically with knowledge in fundamental design skills, general knowledge in academic literacy and a fundamental understanding of business.

The objective of this programme is to enable future designer to become a lifelong learner who can devise innovative products and services through mastering user experience research (使用者經驗研究), ergonomic criteria (人體工學), cultural appreciation (文化欣賞), aesthetic experience (美感經驗),  markets analysis (市場分析), technology opportunities (科技應用開發),  engineering and production knowledge (工程及生産知識), business awareness (商業認知), and social responsibility (社會責任) to meet the emerging needs of both the market and society of Hong Kong, the rapid evolving Pearl River Delta region, China and throughout Asia. For instance, our senior students are expected to be able to critically reflect, define and prototype concepts including but not limited to interactive product (互動産品), internet of things (物聯網産品), product with artificial intelligence and robotic design (人工智能及機械人産品).

You have a passion for creating new products and items.

You have a good sense of proportion, colour and composition, and good visualisation skill.

You are a creative and independent thinker, but also have the ability to work with others in a team.

You are willing to develop a wide range of knowledge and skills such as different materials, prototyping and model making process, computer aided design, production methods, and design business.

You are open-minded, flexible and adaptable. 

You have a good communication skill in English.




The BA(Hons) Scheme in Design is normally undertaken over 4 years of full-time study. Students admitted to senior year places will enter Year 3 of the programme:

  • Year 3 allows the study path to be consolidated in Design Studios and enriched by Discipline Specific Subjects and co-operation with other students in multidisciplinary common Compulsory Subjects.
  • Year 4, the final year, develops students' critical ability in design appreciation, the different perspectives of design thinking, and their own execution processes. They are increasingly allowed to negotiate project outcomes while developing a personal portfolio of a professional standard. This year encourages personal development. Students are prepared for employment or postgraduate studies.

The total credit requirement for graduation is 63, including 9 credits of General University Requirement Subjects, 54 credits of Common Compulsory Subjects and Discipline-Specific Subjects and Electives, and additional 3 to 9 credits of English and/or Chinese language subject(s) for students not meeting the equivalent standard of the Undergraduate Degree LCR.

Career Prospects

Graduates of the BA(Hons) in Product Design can pursue careers as industrial and product designers, product stylists, concept innovators, design managers, entrepreneurs, designers for product manufacturers and trading companies and product design consultants.

• Applicants with an Associate Degree or a Higher Diploma in Design/Design Studies from a recognised institutions.

• Applicants will be invited to submit design portfolios. Those who satisfactorily perform in portfolio submission will be invited for interviews with portfolio presentation.

Mode:Portfolio submission (MUST), and interview with portfolio presentation, as requested by the School according to the previous background of the student.

To understand the potential of applicants for the programme, and to ascertain whether their expectations match what the programme/career path can provide and to evaluate their language, communication and interpersonal skills.

Applicants are required to submit portfolios by early round and main round application deadline. Shortlisted applicants will be invited for individual interviews from November to April.
