Aims and Characteristics

Two full-time programmes are offered under this scheme:

  • BEng(Hons) in Product Engineering with Marketing (BEng PEM)
  • BEng(Hons) in Industrial and Systems Engineering (BEng ISE)




Programme Aims and Learning Outcomes

With decreasing time to market, increasing customer expectations and global competition, product design and development has become increasingly more complex in recent years. Today, product engineers carry out product design and development tasks that are not only limited to functional or engineering design but also need to incorporate the considerations of aesthetic issues, design for the product life cycle, technologies and business issues. There is now an urgent need to produce professionals in product development who can be innovative, knowledgeable and skillful enough to synergise product development with design, technology and business in developing successful new products.


To fulfil this need, the BEng(Hons) in Product Engineering with Marketing programme is designed to achieve the following aims and learning outcomes:

  • Provide integrated education and training to students for synergising product design, technology and business in new product development;
  • Enable students to develop their knowledge in business development, strategic product planning, product marketing and management, and understand how they relate to the development of successful new products; and
  • Supply graduates who are capable of product design and development, and can interact with customers, industrial designers, production personnel, suppliers and vendors, understand market situations and competition environments, and identify market needs and opportunities to convert them into new products that satisfy customer needs and all product engineering requirements.



Programme Characteristics

The programme provides comprehensive education and training in the development of successful new products in which graduates are able to synthesise product design, technologies and business issues.


Adopting an integrative and problem-based teaching and learning approach, the programme helps students to develop their knowledge in product design and development, and marketing, as well as their communication, team-playing, management and self-learning skills. Graduates are able to play leading roles in the industry by virtue of their well-balanced education and practical training.




Programme Aims and Learning Outcomes

Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) is a professional discipline that focuses on developing and implementing optimal solutions from a system-level perspective. This involves people, technology, quality, finance, information, and environmental issues. The main role of Industrial and Systems Engineer is to organise and work harmoniously with others to streamline operational procedures, improve productivity and overall system performance. The ultimate goal is to increase efficiency, reduce operating costs, and increase customer satisfaction. ISE is different from other traditional engineering disciplines whereby knowledge and skills are applied to specific areas. For example, traditional manufacturing engineers usually work in a production environment. In contrast, ISE provides students with the opportunity to work in a variety of organisations in both the industrial and commercial sectors. In this connection, industrial and systems engineers have flexible career paths. ISE graduates are employed in organisations engaged in new product development, transportation, theme parks, logistics services, banks, public utilities, business development consultancy enterprises, government departments, etc. The ultimate objective of the ISE discipline is to provide leadership in the design of integrated industrial and commercial systems for the advancement and well-being of the community.


Programme Characteristics

Emphasis on student-centred learning and the integration of theory and practice are hallmarks of this programme.


In their final year, students can specialise in areas such as product engineering, logistics engineering, knowledge engineering, and product technology, through the selection of their Final Year Project and Electives, the latter of which are selected from a large pool of options.


In addition to the normal curriculum, Work-Integrated Education (WIE) is incorporated into the programme to ensure that students gain work experience relevant to their studies. This serves to enable students to better understand the relevance of their academic studies and to enhance all-round development.


Summer placement opportunities may be provided to students to enable them to gain practical work experience.


Students also have the opportunity to participate in the student exchange programme with universities in countries such as the United States, Canada, Sweden and Finland for one semester.

Recognition and Prospects

Professional Recognition

Both the BEng PEM and BEng ISE programmes have been granted full accreditation by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) as a professional engineering degree programme recognized by other Washington Accord signatories.

The Washington Accord is an international agreement between bodies responsible for accrediting engineering degree programmes.  Currently, it has 18 signatories, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia and New Zealand.


Career Prospects



In recent years, many Hong Kong manufacturers have been switching from being low-cost original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to high value-added original design manufacturers (ODMs), and even to original brand manufacturers (OBMs), to maintain their competitiveness and maximise their profit margins. This has led to a substantial demand for professionals to design and develop new products.


Our graduates have the abilities needed to work as product engineers, project engineers and product design engineers in the development of various kinds of products such as toys, domestic electrical appliances, health care products, electronic consumer products, audio/visual products, green products, power tools and automobile components.



Graduates find employment as industrial engineers, systems engineers, project engineers, product development engineers, manufacturing engineers, logistics engineers, marketing engineers and costing engineers, or in various engineering and management trainee positions in government departments and utility companies before promotion to managerial positions.

Student Message

My first year at PolyU was a thoroughly novel experience. I learned new things, grasped new chances and started a new life. Regarding knowledge, as Product Engineering with Marketing (PEM) is an engineering-based programme, I spent my first year consolidating my engineering knowledge in areas such as calculus and mathematics. However, PEM is not just about engineering. It enables students to design engineering products that can effectively satisfy consumers’ needs. Thus, I am going to learn industrial design, economics and marketing in the coming years.


Apart from regular classes, PEM students can also participate in various learning activities such as competitions, internship programmes and study tours. The most unforgettable experience I’ve had was a study tour to Taiwan. It was an invaluable chance to immerse myself in the village where I stayed and explore a new culture that is very different from that in Hong Kong.


In addition to learning, I started a new life at PolyU. I not only met many new friends, but also lived in a new place and enjoyed gaining independence while staying at Ho Man Tin Hall.
