Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes

Our mission is to educate young people for professional careers in nursing, one of the world's most caring professions. This innovative academic programme develops students' competency in delivering quality care, carrying out relevant research and making significant contributions to the health of the community.

 

Students master the skills of clinical reasoning, communication and the use of technology. They also learn how to work efficiently alone, or with other healthcare professionals, to provide quality healthcare.

 

Programme Characteristics

PolyU was the first university in Hong Kong to provide a pre-registration degree programme in nursing. Our innovative approaches to learning and teaching enhance our students' critical thinking and clinical decision making. Our graduates become the preferred graduates/leaders in the nursing profession and responsible global citizens.

 

Our modern facilities include Nursing Therapeutics Laboratories (equipped and furnished as virtual clinical wards with simulation laboratories# and other latest technologies), Mental Health Nursing Laboratories, The Yuen Yuen Institute Chinese Medicinal Nursing Laboratory, the Dorothy Wong Intensive Care Laboratory, Gerontological Nursing Laboratory, the Integrative Health Clinic, the Herbal Medicine Learning Centre, the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Community Health Services, and the Yuen Yuen Institute Learning Resources Centre.

 

Field practice is arranged in a variety of healthcare settings, including hospitals, old age homes, day care centres and other community centres. We also offer a wide range of overseas student exchange programmes. To obtain properly balanced and comprehensive clinical experiences, students have opportunities to adapt to a variety of practicum locations, environments and rotating work schedules.

 

# Simulation laboratories are equipped with Wireless Patient Simulators and scenario-based computer programs such as BabySim and PediaSim to replicate nursing care in real patient conditions. Through these facilities and related approaches, students are able to identify, develop and implement patients’ care needs, as they immerse themselves in a realistic, dynamic, hands-on situation requiring critical thinking, clinical reasoning and decision-making capabilities. This approach provides opportunities for students to enhance their clinical competence and confidence without the potential to harm the patients.

Curriculum

This is a five-year full-time programme leading to registration with the Nursing Council of Hong Kong as a Registered Nurse (General). The programme equips students for holistic care that encompasses safe, ethical, legal and culturally sensitive nursing therapeutics delivered to clients of all ages and their families in various healthcare settings.

 

Students develop skills in critical inquiry, constantly acquiring new knowledge and using evidence to support their development of generic and all-round attributes such as critical thinking, problem solving and lifelong learning. The course is broad-based, with strong fundamentals in professional education and a flexible curriculum design. It has the following characteristics:

  • A continuous focus on the philosophical underpinnings of the concepts of person, environment, health, nursing and caring along with an emphasis on clinical reasoning and person-centred care. The programme embraces introductory and applied subjects, as well as biological, social sciences and humanities subjects, to develop students’ understanding of the biological and psychosocial dimensions of the human condition and healthcare. Anatomy, physiology, psychology, sociology, caring concepts and clinical reasoning and decision making in action provide a foundation for the students.
  • Coverage of nursing therapeutics, child and adolescent health nursing, childbearing family nursing, adult nursing, mental health nursing, gerontological nursing, community health nursing, nursing therapeutics in Chinese medicine and nursing research.
  • Supervised field studies allow students to integrate theory and practice.
  • An Honours project with capstone experience enables students to apply their knowledge of nursing research and appreciate evidence-based practice.
  • A specific set of General University Requirement subjects such as Leadership and Intra-personal Development, Freshman Seminar, Healthy Lifestyle, Language and Communication, Service Learning and Broadening subjects provides our students with a broad knowledge base for holistic professional learning.
  • The programme runs from simple to complex, applying various teaching methods, simulated practice and problem-solving processes.

Recognition and Prospects

Professional Recognition

The programme is accreditated by the Nursing Council of Hong Kong and graduates are eligible to apply for registration as Registered Nurses (General). 

 

Career Prospects

Graduates are eligible to become Registered Nurses (General) in Hong Kong. They can find employment in numerous clinical and community settings, and develop the specialist areas of study that they choose.

 

The majority of graduates work in the health sector, either under the Hospital Authority or in private organisations such as private hospitals or old age homes. Some graduates undertake research work.

 

Other graduates pursue further studies. Many of our graduates have been accepted for post-registration clinical training and education in local and overseas institutions.

 

Some graduates work overseas after obtaining the proper licences from foreign countries.

Entrance Requirements

Satisfy the General Entrance Requirements of the University (NON-JUPAS Local Year 1 Admissions) and the following specific requirement of this programme:

  • Level 3 or above in English Language and Chinese Language; and Level 2 or above in Mathematics, Liberal Studies and at least one elective subject from Category A in HKDSE examination (Please refer to the subject list) or equivalent;

 

Other Information

  • Preference will be given to those who are fluent in written English and Chinese, and in oral English and Cantonese.
  • Students must pass a health check before they can undergo the clinical training.

Student Message


My wish was to become a healthcare professional to serve those in need. By chance I was offered the opportunity to enrol as a nursing student at PolyU. At first I hesitated, as I had heard that nursing is a stressful profession, and I also had doubts about whether I could become a competent nurse, as I was shy and indecisive. I am now so glad that I gave it a try.

 

The lively lectures, the laboratories and the progressive clinical placements have equipped me with essential knowledge and skills, and have prepared me both intellectually and emotionally to become a nurse. The experienced lecturers and the professional clinical team would not hesitate to share their knowledge and offer timely support. They often encouraged and guided us to take up new challenges.

 

The school helps students to broaden their global vision by supporting them in overseas exchanges and conferences. We are able to gain experience in healthcare settings and in serving the community. The opportunities to participate in the teaching staff’s nursing research are also invaluable.

 

All of these experiences have strengthened my passion for nursing, and my confidence in my ability to become a professional nurse. I am proud to be a member of the PolyU School of Nursing family.

Studying at PolyU has been a fruitful and valuable experience for me. As a nursing student, I am grateful that the School of Nursing has helped to prepare us to become competent nurses by equipping us with practical skills, critical thinking skills and knowledge. The School arranged clinical placements for us in local hospitals. Before graduating, we gained work experience in different specialties in the community and in clinical settings. The School also organised a variety of exchange programmes to China and other countries, which helped us to explore different healthcare systems and nursing practices, and inspired us to integrate positive features into our own practice. Most importantly, our teachers are not only experienced but also caring and compassionate towards patients. They always encourage us to treat our patients with our hearts, and not to be “robot nurses”.

Is spending five years studying for a nursing degree too long? After I completed my third year of studies at PolyU’s School of Nursing, I realised that nursing is not only about learning the theory, but also about applying the knowledge to serve others. Through the lectures and clinical placements, I have gained much theoretical knowledge and practical skills. I have learnt about various nursing procedures and have improved my interpersonal skills when dealing with colleagues and patients and their relatives in real clinical settings. I have also become more aware of my strengths and weaknesses, and am preparing myself for further placements and to become a nurse.

 

In addition to our regular studies, I participated in overseas exchange programmes in Indonesia and England during the summer term. These memorable journeys increased my exposure to nursing in different contexts.
