Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes
The Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Programme in English Studies for the Professions (BAESP) aims to nurture graduates with the abilities/attributes needed to become competent English language professionals and responsible global citizens in the 21st century. At the professional level, the programme aims to produce graduates with a) a high level of competence in English, b) a sound understanding of the theoretical disciplines underlying applied English language studies and the integrated use of the language and c) the strong ability to apply their knowledge and generic linguistic skills in a variety of professional communication contexts.

The programme equips graduates with all-round and integrated professional/academic knowledge, skills and attributes, as follows:

  1. a high level of professional communicative competence in English;
  2. a firm grounding in language studies that can be critically and creatively applied in a variety of business and management contexts;

  2. Single Discipline Major (123 credits + 3 training credits of Work-Integrated Education)

General University Requirements (GUR)

The General University Requirements have 6 components:

  • Freshman Seminar
  • Language & Communication Requirements
  • Leadership & Intra-Personal Development
  • Cluster Area Requirements
  • Service-Learning
  • Healthy Lifestyle

Discipline-Specific Requirements (DSR)

BAESP strives to provide students with a solid foundation in the knowledge and skills they will need to communicate effectively in English for professional, academic, and business purposes in Hong Kong and around the world, where English is the key lingua franca. The BAESP discipline-specific curriculum has the following components.

(1) Major Study Subjects

Major Study Subjects (60 credits) are compulsory for all BAESP students and are organised under three focal areas: Language Sciences, Global Communicative Competence, and English for the Professions. These subjects are designed to provide BAESP students with the solid foundation of academic knowledge and communication skills they will need to become language professionals.

The Capstone Project in Language Studies (6 credits) under the focal area of English for the Professions is compulsory for all BAESP students. It is conducted in the final year under the supervision of ENGL academic staff. Through the Capstone Project, the learning experience students have accumulated during the BAESP programme is consolidated in the form of a dissertation. This capstone experience helps to prepare students for professional practice, further academic pursuits and lifelong learning, while developing their generic competencies.

(2) Major Study Elective Subjects

Students can freely choose BAESP electives (15 DSR credits) across the three focal areas to customise their learning experience and develop their expertise.

(3) Work-Integrated Education (WIE)

WIE (3 training credits) provides a framework for students to integrate what they have learned in the classroom with real-world practice, supporting their development into well-rounded individuals with professional competence. Students typically meet the WIE requirement by completing a 1-month summer internship in an organizational or a corporate context, where they apply classroom knowledge and skills in the working world. WIE assessment is based on three grades: Pass with Merit (M), Pass (P) and Failure (F). However, the subject does not contribute to students' final GPA. Students can apply to waive the WIE requirement if they can demonstrate that they have fulfilled the requirement through other relevant work experience. Students undertaking non-local WIE placements may receive partial financial subsidies from the Centre for Student Advancement and Resources in the form of Offshore WIE Sponsorship (OWS).

More information on the subjects offered can be obtained here.

Student Message

As a fresh graduate, I am profoundly grateful for all of the inspiring and rewarding study experiences I have had in the last four years. BAESP is a very comprehensive programme, offering a wide variety of interesting courses, which equipped me with effective communication strategies and professional knowledge of the English language. I gained not merely a theoretical understanding, but also indispensable language skills that can be practically applied in different contexts and workplace settings. Apart from enabling me to acquire academic knowledge, the overseas exchange programme gave me a chance to appreciate the beauty of diverse cultures. The more I see, the more I realise how much I have not seen. This once-in-a-lifetime experience was an invaluable opportunity for me to explore and understand the world of the English language more thoroughly and extensively. Reflecting on my undergraduate study, I am very fortunate and thankful for every single learning opportunity provided by the Department of English. I believe that through all of these excellent experiences under the BAESP programme, I have built a solid linguistic foundation for further advancing and enriching my knowledge of English language and literature by pursuing a postgraduate degree.
