Programme Aims

Students gain comprehensive foundation knowledge and skills in applied physics, instrumentation and materials technology.

The broad-based design of the programme enables graduates to seek promising careers in the following sectors:

  • Industries that use advanced technology based on scientific instrumentation;
  • Industries that require the specification, selection and processing of metals, ceramics, plastics and advanced materials; and
  • The sales and service areas of commercial or trading companies that deal with high-technology equipment and materials.

The programme provides a route of articulation to degree programmes.




This programme is unique in Hong Kong and has a long history since 1978.  Many of our graduates have already reached senior positions in the industrial and commercial sectors.

The broad-based design of the programme enhances the competitiveness and adaptability of our graduates in the dynamic economic and technological environment of Hong Kong.

Graduates can also pursue further studies in many different fields at local and overseas universities.



  • Students study subjects in three major areas, which include applied physics, materials science/technology and scientific instrumentation.
  • Year One subjects include Core Subjects, in addition to Mathematics, English, Chinese and broadening subjects.

Our graduates work in a variety of areas from education to manufacturing and service in industrial sectors and government organisations. They take up a wide variety of positions, such as engineers in testing laboratories, electronic engineers, materials engineers, sales engineers, quality assurance engineers, reliability engineers, customer service engineers, product engineers, project engineers, instructors, computer engineers, programmers, IT officers, technical officers and technicians. Their choices of career are diverse and flexible, and some of them pursue further studies in universities.

Of all government-funded higher diploma programmes available in Hong Kong, the Higher Diploma in Applied Physics offered by PolyU is the most attractive. I was impressed by its diverse and challenging curriculum. In addition to the interesting applied physics courses, I learned advanced mathematics, such as linear algebra, calculus and statistics, which helped me build a strong foundation of knowledge. My scope of knowledge was further widened through programming-related and materials science related courses. In the laboratory sessions, I gained hands-on experimental skills and learned how to compile comprehensive laboratory reports. With ample support from the patient and competent lecturers, I had a fruitful learning experience. The lecturers were very responsive and gave prompt feedback to students after each assessment, which helped us to achieve the learning outcomes. I strongly believe that my rewarding campus life is attributed to the superb learning environment provided by PolyU and the Department. On top of that, most graduates can gain admission to Bachelor degree programmes. For all of these reasons, I strongly recommend that you choose this programme and enjoy your campus life here!

Studying in the Higher Diploma in Applied Physics is a memorable experience for me.  When I was admitted PolyU two years ago, I was quite worried about my academic performance and adaptation to university study.  Fortunately, I met a group of kind and caring professors in the Department who are willing to help me with any problems.  Through this programme, I gained valuable learning experience and had a deeper understanding of various physics-related topics such as mechanics and waves.  I was also able to acquire laboratory skills as well as knowledge in mathematics and computer programming.  During the laboratory sessions, I was provided with hand-on training in using different instruments and apparatuses.  All these knowledge and experiences are conducive to my further study and future career.
