Programme Aims

This programme aims to provide students and produce highly skilled graduates with:

  1. In-depth understanding of the operation of aviation engineering including aircraft and aviation systems, airworthiness and up-to-date technologies, as well as specialized knowledge in a chosen stream of study;
  2. Competence to handle different engineering problems academically and practically in the aviation industry;
  3. Sufficient knowledge to manage and solve problems through effective and efficient project management and planning; and
  4. Confidence in communication with different stakeholders by the use of state-of-the-art technologies and aviation language (both English and Chinese).

 

 

Programme Characteristics

The Aviation Engineering programme aims to train students to become aeronautical and aviation engineers with strong skills in and understanding of engineering and with engineering management and social responsibility for the society and the environment. Upon completion of this programme, graduates will be able to pursue a career in aircraft component design and engineering, aircraft maintenance engineering, aviation engineering operations and management and many other areas.

Academic and Training Credits

  • For students with Level 2 or above in HKDSE Physics (or Combined Science with a component in Physics), or equivalent qualifications, the number of credits required for graduation is 124 academic credits and 10 Industrial Centre Practical Training credits.
  • For students without Level 2 or above in HKDSE Physics (or Combined Science with a component in Physics), or equivalent qualifications, an additional 3 credits of Introduction to Physics should be taken.

The 124 academic credits consist of 30 mandatory credits of General University Requirements (GUR) and 94 credits of Discipline-Specific Requirements (DSR).

 

First Study Year

The students receive a broad education in mathematics and science, and learn about their role and responsibilities as an engineer, providing them with a strong foundation to learn aviation engineering-dedicated subjects in the years that follow.

 

Second Study Year

The students acquire fundamental knowledge of aircraft and aviation systems and gain hands-on experience in aircraft component manufacturing and maintenance processes.

 

Third Study Year

The students embark on more advanced subjects such as aircraft design, aviation safety, stability and control, propulsion systems and avionics systems.

 

Final Study Year

The students have the opportunity to apply their skills and knowledge in their final year project and focus their study on a desired elective stream to acquire specialized knowledge.

 

Stream of Study

Students can choose to pursue one of the following study streams:

  • Aircraft Services Engineering
  • Aeronautical Engineering
  • Aircraft Maintenance Engineering*
  • Introduction to Pilot Ground Theory**

Students who opt-for HKAR147 (B1.1) licenced aircraft engineer training are required to choose the Aircraft Maintenance Engineering stream.

** Students who are interested in attending the Airline Transport Pilot’s Licence (ATPL) upon graduation are strongly recommended to attend these four electives.

 

Other Learning Experiences

Summer internships, industrial visits, onsite experience sharing and industrial training are arranged to complement classroom teaching and enhance students’ learning and industrial experience in the field of aeronautics and aviation. Industrial training is provided by the PolyU Industrial Centre.

 

The programme covers a wide range of aviation engineering and societal knowledge including

  • aircraft flight mechanics, dynamics and stability
  • aircraft systems and avionics
  • aircraft design and structures
  • aircraft propulsion systems
  • aviation safety, reliability, airworthiness and compliance

 

Work-Integrated Education

Students are required to spend at least 2 weeks of full-time WIE training in a suitable organization before graduation.

Professional Recognition

This programme has been granted provisional accreditation by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE). Full accreditation will be sought in 2020.

 

 

Career Prospects

Graduates will be able to seek employment as professional engineers in aviation engineering fields including aircraft component design, manufacturing and maintenance organizations, in air transportation and logistics organizations, airport engineering operation and civil aviation authorities.

Student Message


Now in my final year, I have enjoyed every moment of PolyU’s Aviation Engineering programme, and am honoured to have been admitted. The Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering department offers a warm and friendly environment, with excellent support for students from department staff to make them feel at home. I strongly believe that prospective students who are looking for advanced campus facilities and are interested in aviation should consider the BEng(Hons) in Aviation Engineering. The programme has many excellent professors and boasts versatile expertise from the industry as well as academia, ranging from navigation systems to robotics, control, etc. Below are some of my favourite aspects of this programme.

 

Internship Opportunities

Our department maintains partnerships with many local and overseas aviation organisations to provide internships for students. I had the opportunity to intern at world-renowned companies such as Boeing, Cathay Pacific, and HAESL. Working in the US for six months was an eye-opening experience. I gained insights into the aviation industry and developed my professional engineering, business, and negotiation skills. These experiences taught me that learning never ends, and that it requires patience, consistency, and self-evaluation. Those who choose to learn continuously are the ones who are best prepared to live life to the fullest.

 

International Exposure

AAE also offers students numerous university exchange opportunities and emphasises the need for international exposure. I had the chance to undertake a student exchange trip to Melbourne, Australia for a semester. There, I made wonderful friends from different countries, immersed myself in a multi-cultural environment, and embraced dynamic changes. This truly changed my perspective and taught me a global mindset.

 

Competitions

I also had the opportunity to compete with representatives of other universities in Arizona, US to design and construct a UAV. The most exciting part was the challenge of designing an aircraft with multiple requirements, which can only be achieved by complex multidisciplinary work. I applied my knowledge from the programme and developed leadership skills and technical expertise that I would not have gained without the guidance of excellent professors and encouragement from the department.

 

Projects and Research Experience

Last, our department supports students in exploring their future pathways and encourages them to undertake various kinds of projects and research. With the wholesome support and guidance of Dr Li-Ta Hsu, I had the opportunity to undertake individual research. This enabled me to deepen my knowledge and interests, as well as to develop a closer bond with the department.

Finally, I look forward to many more enriching experiences and have nothing but the utmost gratitude for our department. These four years’ studying at AAE have been the most fruitful imaginable!


LEE Max Jwo Lem



Although many aviation enthusiasts are passionate to be a pilot, I am quite a different one that I am much interested in the engineering side. Aircraft engineers have to ensure the aircraft is in an airworthy state that it can carry passengers comfortably and safely, which can lead to the satisfaction of every customer towards the safety and comfortability of an aircraft.

 

Although aviation-related subjects are mainly allocated in the second half of this programme, the fundamental knowledge such as mathematics and physics from the first-year studies can strengthen my engineering knowledge to study the following advanced courses. During the freshman project class, we could also build up our own hovercraft for competition and learn the practical skills of designing. Besides lectures and tutorials, training in the Industrial Centre also gives us a chance to acquire practical skills like using different machines and computer-aided drawing (CAD) skills. This hands-on experience can provide a more solid foundation and useful workplace skills in the engineering field by experiential learning.

 

Other than regular lessons, joining the Aircraft Engineer Development Scheme (AEDS) organized by The Hong Kong Institute of Engineers (HKIE) also allow us to have more valuable experiences for enriching our university study. In this scheme, we are assigned to some industry mentors. We can gain insight into the industry from their experience and are offered visits to different aviation facilities to understand more about the actual operations of the aviation industry. Through the scheme, we can start to attempt the HKAR-66 Aircraft Maintenance License examinations during our undergraduate studies and be able to attain the license as soon as possible.

 

I believe the four years spend in the AE programme will be a fruitful and exciting journey, and I am looking forward to exploring more in the coming years to equip myself to be a future aircraft engineer.


YIU Cho Yin



I am currently in my senior study year in the BEng(Hons) in the Aviation Engineering programme. Over the past study years, I gained a lot of fundamental knowledge about different areas of engineering such as mechanics, material science, electricals and electronics. These subjects allow me to build up a solid foundation for my further studies in the aviation industry.

 

In addition to the lectures and tutorials, the Department provides me with great opportunities and nurtures me as an aviation professional. Visits to industrial organizations have given me a better understanding of the lecture contents and the pathway to becoming a licensed aircraft engineer. I also joined the Aircraft Engineer Development Scheme offered by The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. Through the scheme, guided tutorials were provided on HKAR-66 AML subjects and students could meet their mentors regularly to learn from their decades of experience in the industry.

 

With the training and opportunities provided by PolyU, my passion for becoming an aircraft engineer has strengthened, and I hope to be part of the industry in the near future.


LAU Nelson Yue



The freshman year of study in the AE programme was a fruitful and invaluable learning experience. I have gained a broad foundation of science and engineering knowledge, and through receiving sufficient training in the Industrial Centre and other workshops, I managed to acquire practical and important skills in operating different machines, apparatus and software. Now, as a more senior student, I am equipped with a deeper understanding of aircraft and the aviation industry. I am eager to enroll in advanced subjects including aerodynamics, aircraft design and aircraft electronics to prepare myself as a professional aviation engineer.

 

This programme also requires students to study management and operations in the aviation industry, and courses such as flight management systems and aviation project management ensure students can grasp the related principles in the aviation industry. I am looking forward to the focused stream in the final year, which is one of the special characteristics of the AE programme; we can then unleash our full potential and develop our own specific areas of interest. Those who are also passionate about the aviation industry will dream of this high-quality learning journey, like I did.

I am an aviation enthusiast and always want to learn more about aviation and the science behind it. Therefore I chose to study the Aviation Engineering programme, and I do not regret making such a choice. In my first year of study, I dived into the world of engineering, and the non-academic lectures and activities held by the Division and the Engineering Departments broadened my outlook and showed me how amazing engineering is. In the programme, students can gain extensive professional knowledge, and learn about real-life engineering through industrial training. Such a well-rounded programme suits future engineers, pilots or even entrepreneurs.

 

In addition to the regular classes, AE students can also join many aviation-related local and international activities. I personally joined many clubs and programmes, and the most memorable so far was the Aircraft Engineer Development Scheme organized by the Hong Kong Institute of Engineers. Through the event, I gained insights into the MRO industry in Hong Kong. I also completed the HKAR-66 examination and training during my studies, which can enable me to become an aircraft maintenance engineer sooner than regular graduates.

 

As a current AE student and a Non-JUPAS applicant, I strongly recommend this programme to aviation enthusiasts, as the opportunities provided by PolyU and the Division make the 4-year university life extremely enjoyable and exciting.
