Aims & Characteristics

Aims and Characteristics

Programme Aims

This programme nurtures forward-looking, competent occupational therapists capable of promoting the health and well-being of people in Hong Kong.

A combination of medical, psychological and social science subjects prepares students to enhance the functional performance of community-dwelling people with disabilities in terms of self-care, leisure and work. Students learn how to minimise the effects of disabilities, promote health and improve the quality of life of clients and their families.

The programme prepares students to deliver client-centred occupational therapy with a commitment to promoting equal opportunities for all members of the community. It also prepares them for helping careers in which they will empower clients to manage their disabilities, educate the public about healthy and meaningful living and pass down their knowledge to new generations of therapists.

Characteristics

This programme adopts an outcome-based learning approach and integrates academic and clinical education. We provide numerous excellent learning resources with up-to-date technology such as Web-based teaching and self-learning packages.

We also provide global learning experiences in occupational therapy. Fieldwork placements and academic exchange programmes are available in the Chinese mainland and overseas.

Placement Opportunities

Clinical education is an important component of professional training and development. It is delivered through clinical placements in various settings in Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland and overseas. Students have attachments in a range of settings, including hospitals, out-patient clinics, childcare centres, elderly care homes, adult training centres and workshops, and long stay care homes. Overseas clinical placements have been organised in partnership with universities such as Curtin University of Technology (Australia), the University of South Australia (Australia), the University of Toronto (Canada), McGill University (Canada), Metropolitan University College (Denmark), JAMK University of Applied Sciences (Finland), the University of Southern California (USA), Nanyang Polytechnic (Singapore) and Chang Gung University (Taiwan). Further overseas placements will be arranged for students in the coming years to broaden their global perspectives.

The Bachelor of Science (Hons) Occupational Therapy (OT) programme provides holistic and diverse teaching to help students become competent occupational therapists. Among the various courses I took in my first year, my two favourites were OT Theory & Process I and Research Methods and Statistics. OT Theory & Process I not only introduces beliefs, ethics and processes related to occupational therapy, but also allows students to apply contemporary OT models to different cases to gain a comprehensive understanding of patients and patients’ lives. I cannot wait to apply the OT models that I have learned in a clinical placement. The other course, Research Methods and Statistics, allows students to appraise previous scientific research critically and interpret findings with relevance to clinical practice.

During my invaluable first year of study at PolyU, I learned to identify and select academic sources to support my point of view. Also, various group projects improved my leadership and communication skills, which are vital components of occupational therapy.
