Aims & Characteristics

Aims and Characteristics

Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes

This programme has two main aims: first, to educate students to become effective, efficient and caring social policy practitioners who are responsible for analysing, formulating and implementing policies for the improvement of social well-being; and second, to enable students to become competent, innovative and ethical social entrepreneurs who can turn social problems into opportunities. Students are also expected to develop their informational literacy, critical thinking and problem-solving skills and to uphold core social values. The programme will also facilitate students to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for lifelong learning.

Students are expected to demonstrate knowledge and skills in social policy analysis and social enterprise operation. Students are also expected to develop social empathy, moral sensibilities and a critical capacity, and a sustained interest in understanding the main issues and challenges faced by social policy practitioners and social entrepreneurs.

Programme Characteristics

This programme is designed to integrate theory and practice. The curriculum is heavily geared towards meeting the growing demands for trained professionals and practitioners in the fields of social policy and social enterprise. Students are expected to be equipped with the theoretical knowledge necessary for working in a wide range of organisations dealing with labour and welfare issues, health care and housing needs, advocacy and cultural and environmental protection, and also to have real-life exposure to these areas through specially designed professional attachments. They will learn to balance and resolve the competing values of bureaucratic versus human concerns and private profit-making versus public good and well-being.

In addition, overseas placement opportunities, exchange-out and study tours are available for high-achieving students.

Curriculum

Curriculum

The Programme is divided into two streams:

  • Social Policy, and
  • Social Entrepreneurship and Administration.

Students can choose to specialise in either stream for intensive learning or to study subjects in both streams. The social policy stream focuses on areas such as housing, welfare, civil society governance, labour, environment, social diversity and social research to strengthen students’ understanding of specific policy concerns and issues. The social entrepreneurship and administration stream focuses on areas such as social entrepreneurship, creating innovative ideas, social capital development, corporate social responsibility, programme planning and evaluation, marketing and financial management to enhance students’ skills and ability in performing social entrepreneurship.

The curriculum is further divided into five categories:

  • Common Foundation (including University broad discipline and service-learning requirements);
  • Common and Professional Cores;
  • Stream and Social Sciences Electives;
  • Integrative Subjects (including professional attachment and workshops as well as a Capstone Project); and
  • Chinese and English Language Requirements.

These subjects provide students with a strong social science foundation and a capacity for critical and analytical thinking. They can then progress and broaden their knowledge base and communication skills, thus enhancing their ability to work in the fields of social policy and social enterprise.

Student Message

Student Message

I spent the last 4 years at PolyU and made dozens of memories. I am delighted to have been part of this big, warm family. Not only did I learn a lot from the lectures and seminars, but I also gained a lot beyond the classroom. All of the guidance and support I received from professors, departmental staff, and my buddies at PolyU shaped a better me. APSS also gave me thousands of opportunities for self-development, both local and outbound.

Frankly, I feel that I achieved more than I expected before I embarked on my university career. In my freshman year, I made a group of friends in the departmental society; we spent so much time together and organised activities. I had the chance to explore my opportunities by completing a student exchange in Seoul a year later, followed by an outbound placement in Taiwan. In my last year of study, apart from completing my capstone thesis, I took part in a competition on “Policy Entrepreneurship” with my classmates. We learned and saw things that we had never anticipated. Without this experience and these opportunities, I would have never become the mature me that I am today. That is why I wish to thank everyone that I have met in the last 4 years.
