Student Message

During my undergraduate studies, I had the life-changing opportunity to undertake a 3-month research internship at the University of Oldenburg, Germany. This kind of research internship is uncommon in Hong Kong, so I’m especially thankful for this opportunity. It was a valuable and practical experience for me. My work in the research group was highly relevant to my undergraduate studies. The programming skills and mathematical knowledge that I gained at PolyU helped me to construct functions and transform them into a programming model. Through this internship, I gained practical knowledge and skills that were extremely important to my studies and future career development. Even more importantly, an unexpected result of my work was the opportunity to publish a scientific paper! This internship experience enhanced my interest in scientific research and totally changed my perception of research work. It also inspired me to pursue further studies in Germany. If you like mathematics and want to develop your career in this field, PolyU’s Investment Science programme is tailor-made for you!

Steven Tang

Integrated with both mathematical and financial knowledge, the Investment Science programme helped me to develop not only theoretical knowledge and quantitative skillset, but also practical and interpersonal skills. As a science student, I learnt far beyond solving equations. From participating in group projects and presentations, I was inspired to come up with creative mathematics/ finance related ideas that were really interesting and exciting to me. Besides, we were encouraged to explore different statistical tools and software such as SAS, SPSS, R and Minitab. All these software are very useful in my daily work of validating prices of different bonds and equities. Moreover, I have been trained on statistical inference through analyzing big data. This programme has equipped me to pursue career in the banking industry.

PolyU has provided a good platform for me to enrich myself and develop my potential. Through studying Investment Science programme and joining extra-curricular workshops, I have not only obtained comprehensive knowledge of statistics, mathematics and finance, but also strengthened my technical skills such as programming. In addition, I had plenty of opportunities to join academic contests such as the Mathematical Contest in Modeling, which further enhanced my research ability and broadened my horizon. My service learning in summer 2015 concerning ecotourism in rural and developing regions made me realize the significance of serving the community by using the knowledge I gained. One year later, I participated in an internship programme organized by PolyU in Shanghai, which gave me initial exposure to financial technology. In summer 2017, I successfully finished a technical exchange programme in Germany, which I gained valuable project experience regarding data mining and machine learning. Thanks to PolyU and the Department of Applied Mathematics, I have explored many possibilities, which will benefit my future career development.

Being passionate in business and mathematics, studying Investment Science programme is ever an inevitable choice. It helps me building a good foundation on Mathematics, Statistics and Finance. In order to prepare students on apprehending real working environment, the department holds workshops on different kinds of statistical software, such as SAS and SPSS. It also offers students many great internship opportunities. During my studies in AMA, I received trainings from Census and Statistics Department and Kwong Wah Hospital, as a research assistant. Such experience enhances my knowledge on interpreting data, doing concise analysis and giving constructive suggestions to senior. Thanks to professors’ and instructors’ generous assistance on my worries over academic studies and future career path, I become more enthusiastic with statistics. Afterwards, I have completed my Master degree in Statistics and Finance in UK. I am truly honored and grateful to receive distinction award. I am now working in Investment Department in Chinese Estates Holdings Limited. I am mainly responsible for integrating and analyzing different sorts of financial data; recording CEO's & company's security and bond trading and reporting to the Board of Directors. AMA has brought valuable career-enhancing knowledge and practical skills to me, ensuring a better adaption to such fast-paced and stressful job environment in financial industry. Studying Investment Science programme is definitely a stepping-stone to success!

The Investment Science programme provided me with a strong practical foundation for my career development. In addition to the classroom-based teaching, the visits to mainland financial institutions deepen my understanding of the Chinese market in the real life. The programme also helped me to develop my analytical and problem-solving skills, both of which will benefit me throughout my life.

Elvis Wong

The Department of Applied Mathematics has given me a special university experience. In the 3rd year of my undergraduate study, I have participated in a student exchange programme and spent a semester studying at Yonsei University in South Korea. During this period, I have made friends with different cultural background.  I have been given many opportunities to exchange ideas and broaden my perspective on various global issues with international students. This experience has inspired me to step out of my comfort zone.  The Investment Science programme has provided me a special study experience and widen my vision to the world.  I would highly recommend this programme.

I am a graduate of BSc(Hons) in Investment Science programme. I am thankful for meeting the inspirational lecturers and supportive tutors in my study. Through discussion of relevant topics like regression modelling and probabilistic modelling, I had a deeper understanding on how to apply these concepts and theories in the daily life. In order to understand the recent development of different economic and financial systems, I took my internship at ICBC in Shanghai in my second year of study. The internship further widened my horizon as an investment science student. To sum up, the statistical knowledge I learnt from this programme was far more than I expected. It provided me with a solid knowledge to pursue my career in the statistics profession.
