Aims & Characteristics

Aims and Characteristics

This 4-year full-time scheme is designed to provide students with solid training in mathematical, statistical, and computer programming skills, with special emphasis on applications in investment and finance analytics or data science and analytics. This scheme comprises the following two undergraduate major programmes:

BSc (Hons) in Data Science and Analytics
This major focuses on training graduates with expertise that cuts across core disciplines of mathematics, statistics and computer science. It emphasises the critical arc from data to information, information to knowledge, and knowledge to decision making.

BSc (Hons) in Investment Science and Finance Analytics
This major is designed to provide students with strong mathematical and statistical skills and a thorough understanding of their applications in the world of modern investment and finance analytics.



All students admitted to the Scheme take a common set of subjects in their first year and select one of the majors under the Scheme in their second year.

Year One: Students study the General University Requirement (GUR) subjects and subjects common to the Scheme, such as Calculus, Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra, Probability & Distributions, and Programming Fundamentals.

Year Two: Students are streamed into one of the two majors under the Scheme based on their individual preferences. They continue to complete subjects common to the Scheme, such as Introduction to Statistics, Database System, Principles of Programming, Applied Linear Models, and Operations Research Methods, and start to study major discipline-specific compulsory subjects in Data Science and Analytics or Investment Science and Finance Analytics.

Year Three: Students are expected to complete most of the major discipline-specific compulsory subjects, including Statistical Machine Learning, Big Data Analytics, Decision Analysis, and Optimization Methods for the Data Science and Analytics programme and Corporate Finance, Theory of Interest and Portfolio Analysis, Investment, Derivative Pricing, and Econometrics for the Investment Science and Finance Analytics programme.

Year Four: Students have the flexibility to choose their major discipline-specific elective subjects from a large pool of elective subjects in the fields of statistics, data science, computing science, finance and investment, health and medical informatics, and urban informatics. They also complete a Capstone Project in which they tackle a problem or research topic in data science/finance analytics/statistics/applied mathematics, consolidating the discipline-specific knowledge, conceptual understanding, and generic skills they have developed through different stages of the programme.

Secondary Major Details

The option of Secondary Major in AI and Data Analytics (AIDA) is available to the students of BSc (Hons) in Investment Science and Finance Analytics; the option of Secondary Major in Innovation and Entrepreneurship (IE) is available to the students of BSc (Hons) in Data Science and Analytics.


Selection Criteria

Studying on a Secondary Major is not mandatory.  Only students with a Cumulative GPA of 2.70 or above may be considered for Secondary Major enrolment.  Each Secondary Major may stipulate additional selection criteria for admission.  Students must apply to and obtain approval from the programme offering Department, no later than the commencement of the second year of study, to be admitted to the Secondary Major.


Credit Requirement

The students of BSc (Hons) in Data Science and Analytics (DSA) with a Secondary Major of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (IE) is required to complete 148 credits for graduation; the students of BSc (Hons) in Investment Science and Finance Analytics (ISFA) with a Secondary Major of AI and Data Analytics (AIDA) is required to complete 153 credits for graduation.

^Students of ISFA + AIDA may count up to 12 credits for double counting of their Major/GUR subjects including Integrated Capstone Project (6 credits) towards the Secondary Major.

Graduates of DSA + IE are also accredited by Hong Kong Statistical Society and Royal Statistical Society of UK;
Graduates of ISFA + AIDA are also accredited by Hong Kong Securities and Investment Institute, Hong Kong Statistical Society (subject to confirmation), and Royal Statistical Society of UK (subject to confirmation)

The Scheme is designed to develop students’ analytical, critical thinking, problem-solving and communication skills, nurturing an outlook and methodology that equip graduates to pursue a variety of careers, such as in telecoms, information technology, market research, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, investment banking, fund management, risk management, and financial product development and pricing.

Professional Recognition
On the completion of the programme, graduates are expected to receive partial exemption from the professional assessment of:
1. The Hong Kong Securities and Investment Institute
2. The Hong Kong Statistical Society
3. The Royal Statistical Society of the UK

Student Message

As a student without a solid mathematics background, I originally found it difficult to understand advanced mathematics topics. The faculty in the Department of Applied Mathematics are very supportive and patient. They helped me to fill my knowledge gaps and develop a passion for studying mathematics. In this inspiring and friendly learning environment, I was encouraged to delve deeper into statistics study. Currently, I am pursuing a postgraduate degree to further develop my applied statistics knowledge. I hope to contribute to research in this field in the future.

BSc (Hons) in Investment Science was my first choice in JUPAS application. In addition to the statistics theories that I’m highly interested in, this programme also covers knowledge of other areas such as programming, economics and finance, and their application in solving real-life problems.
Thanks to the opportunities offered by the Department, I have made the most of my 4 years at PolyU. From joining the Departmental Society of Applied Mathematics (上莊), going for an exchange in USA, to taking internship in Beijing, I seized all the chances to equip myself with professional knowledge, expand social circle and develop my interpersonal skill.

Customers in every industry, from financial services to entertainment, e.g. video games, generate a massive amount of data on a daily basis. The BSc(Hons) in Data Science and Analytics programme aims to provide students with core knowledge and analytical skills in the field of data analytics. This will undoubtedly support my future career development.

Studying the BSc(Hons) in Investment Science at PolyU was a great choice for me. This programme not only equipped me with mathematical, financial and statistical skills but also enhanced my logical thinking, problem solving and communication skills. During my three years of study, I had the opportunity to take up an internship in the Census and Statistics Department and participate in various events and activities, such as the Shaw Prize Award Presentation Ceremony and overseas trips. The Investment Science programme integrates mathematical and financial knowledge. It has helped me to develop not only my theoretical knowledge and quantitative skillset but also my practical and interpersonal skills. I learned much more than how to solve equations. Through group projects and presentations, I was inspired to come up with creative and exciting mathematics-/finance-related ideas. We were also encouraged to explore various statistical tools and software, such as SAS, SPSS, R and Minitab. All of these tools are very useful in my daily work of validating the prices of bonds and equity. The programme trained me in statistical inference and enabled me to generate insights through analysis of big data. In sum, the programme perfectly equipped me to pursue a career in banking.

I have always been interested in statistics and mathematics. Therefore, I decided to study a related discipline at university to obtain the knowledge and skills needed for career success in this field. PolyU’s BSc(Hons) in Investment Science programme was the perfect match. From basic theories of mathematics, statistics and finance to real-world applications of knowledge in the investment and finance industries, I was equipped with knowledge and skills that helped me to secure various internship opportunities in finance, statistics and market research companies. During my undergraduate studies, I had the life-changing opportunity to undertake a three-month research internship at the University of Oldenburg, Germany. This kind of research internship is uncommon in Hong Kong, so I’m especially thankful for this opportunity. It was an invaluable practical experience for me. My work in the research group was highly relevant to my undergraduate studies. The programming skills and mathematical knowledge that I gained at PolyU helped me to construct functions and transform them into a programming model. Through this internship, I gained practical knowledge and skills that were hugely beneficial to my studies and future career development. Even more importantly, an unexpected result of my work was the opportunity to publish a scientific paper! This internship experience enhanced my interest in scientific research and totally changed my perception of the research process. It also inspired me to pursue further studies in Germany. Given my passion for business and mathematics, applying to PolyU’s Investment Science programme was exactly the right choice for me. It helped me build a good foundation in mathematics, statistics and finance. To prepare students to excel in a real working environment, the AMA Department holds workshops on various kinds of statistical software, such as SAS and SPSS. It also offers students many great internship opportunities. During my studies, I received training from the Census and Statistics Department and Kwong Wah Hospital, as a research assistant. This experience enhanced my ability to interpret data, perform concise analysis and offer senior employees constructive suggestions. With my professors’ and instructors’ generous assistance, I was able to resolve all of my worries about my studies and future career path, and I became more enthusiastic about statistics. After graduating, I completed a Master’s degree in Statistics and Finance in the UK. I am truly honoured and grateful to have graduated with a distinction. I am now working in the Investment Department of Chinese Estates Holdings Limited. I am mainly responsible for integrating and analysing various kinds of financial data, recording the CEO’s and company's security and bond trading and reporting to the board of directors. Studying in the AMA Department gave me invaluable career-enhancing knowledge and practical skills, enabling me to swiftly adapt to the fast-paced and stressful environment of the financial industry.
