Aims & Characteristics

Aims and Characteristics

Programme Aims
The BBA(Hons) Scheme in Accounting and Finance comprises the following awards. It gives students the flexibility to decide on a final award in their first year of study.

BBA (Hons) in Accountancy
This programme provides students with a well-rounded business education and an opportunity to specialise in accounting. They are provided with an integrated academic foundation for careers as accountants with the required competencies, independence of mind, objectivity, and ethical awareness.

BBA (Hons) in Accounting and Finance
The aim of this programme is to exploit the synergy between accounting and finance and prepare students to become competent accountants with a sound knowledge of finance.

The programme provides a well-rounded business education and an opportunity to specialise in accounting and finance.  Students develop strong skills in accounting and finance, including accounting and financial analysis, control and risk management, and corporate governance and ethics.

BBA (Hons) in Financial Services
The financial services industry is a major pillar of modern business. It deals with the efficient flow of funds between various business units.

This programme provides a well-rounded business education and an opportunity to specialise in financial services. Students develop strong analytical skills and critical thinking, which are gained through rigorous training in finance and the associated disciplines.

Programme Characteristics
Our highly qualified academic staff members share their business experiences and research findings with students. Students are able to apply what they have learned through internships.

Our programmes integrate the latest technological knowledge related to business into the curriculum. New concepts such as fintech and big data will be included in specific accounting and finance selected subjects.

Each student who joins the Professional Mentoring programme is assigned a mentor who is an experienced industry executive. Mentors provide advice to students to plan for their future careers.

Subject to availability, BBA students can spend a semester studying at another university overseas or in the Chinese mainland, with the credits counted towards their PolyU degree.

Work-Integrated Education (WIE)
To graduate, every student must complete 100 hours (3 training credits) of WIE. The School offers opportunities for students to work in firms in Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland during either the spring semester or the summer. These and other forms of work experience count towards the WIE requirement.

Characteristics of Scheme-based Admission

Students first follow a common curriculum under the Scheme.

It offers students approximately one year to identify their area(s) of interest and career aspirations, which facilitates their Major programme selection.

The decision to admit a student to a Major programme will be made by the School based on the student’s choice and overall GPA of Year One study. Students will be asked to rank their choices of Major programme (from the most preferred one to the least) during semester 2 of their Year One study for the School’s consideration and approval.

The number of students admitted to BBA (Hons) in Accountancy, BBA (Hons) in Accounting and Finance and BBA (Hons) in Financial Services will be capped respectively at 60%, 40% and 40% of the number of students in the respective year.

Curriculum

Curriculum

All programmes under the Scheme have the following structure:
• General University Requirements (GUR)
• Compulsory Core subjects for all programmes under the Scheme
• Discipline-specific subjects
• Free Electives

Year 1 covers the University’s Compulsory Core subjects and fundamental business subjects, along with Broadening subjects and Language and Communication Requirements subjects. These subjects expose students to a wide range of business, accounting and finance disciplines, helping them to make informed choices about a suitable award with specialisation for graduation.

From Year 2 onwards, students follow the curriculums of their selected Major programmes. They also have the chance to apply their knowledge through a one-year Capstone Project in their final year of study.

To qualify for graduation, a student must complete at least 120 academic credits and 3 training credits in Work-Integrated Education (WIE).

Student Message

Student Message

While studying at PolyU, I have been motivated to achieve academic excellence and self-development.

I have received professional education in both practical and theoretical aspects of my course through lectures, internship opportunities, competitions and workshops. Thanks to enthusiastic teachers and a well-equipped learning environment, I have been inspired to pinpoint my interests in the business field and pave my career path.

As well as offering first-class teaching, PolyU provides various opportunities for its students to attain all-round development. During an exchange programme to Denmark, I had the opportunity to broaden my horizons and expand my global vision by communicating with people from different cultures. My flexibility and adaptability were cultivated by living a lifestyle that was totally different from that in Hong Kong. My communication skills were further honed during a Service-Learning trip to Cambodia in summer 2018. Through teaching English and preparing my own teaching kit, I also developed leadership skills that will undoubtedly serve me in my future career and interpersonal relations.
