Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes
The BEng (Hons) Scheme in Electrical Engineering consists of the following degrees. It aims to give students the flexibility to decide on the final degree in their study.
BEng (Hons) in Electrical Engineering is one of the premier electrical engineering degree programmes in Hong Kong that provides unique and up-to-date education in electrical power and energy. The curriculum is designed to give a balanced treatment of university core requirements, electrical engineering fundamentals, advanced and specialist topics, and non-technical subjects such as management.
BEng (Hons) in Transportation Systems Engineering is unique in Hong Kong, providing students with interdisciplinary knowledge and perspectives in modern transportation systems and a direct career path into the high-growth transportation industry and related sectors.
Engineering practice is an integrated component of the curriculum. Student learning is supplemented by a variety of laboratory, training and project activities. Students also develop good presentation and problem-solving skills through mini-projects and final-year projects. Students are required to take the Work-Integrated Education (WIE) component, which may be in the form of summer training or industrial attachment.
Students can also participate in exchange programmes and spend a semester at an overseas university. Every year, a number of students participate in exchange programmes with institutions including Cardiff University, National University of Singapore, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Technical University of Munich and Czech Technical University.
Engineering and Entrepreneurship Club (E&E Club) provides a platform to enhance students’ interests in engineering and understanding of entrepreneurship. E&E Club organises workshops to train students’ technical skills and invites experts to share requirements of entrepreneurship with students. It also supports students participating in both local and overseas underwater robot competitions.
Seminars, industry visits and overseas study tours are also organised to broaden students’ horizons.
BEng (Hons) in Electrical Engineering
BEng (Hons) in Transportation Systems Engineering
In Year Three, essential knowledge of transportation systems, such as system analysis, planning, and technical subjects from various engineering disciplines, is provided. Discipline-specific language subjects are also studied.
During their final year, students take four core subjects in transportation systems and one elective subject covering advanced or specialised topics related to transportation. Students may choose individual projects that are relevant to transportation systems engineering.
Information on the subjects offered can be obtained at https://www.polyu.edu.hk/ee/.
The option of Secondary Major in Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics (AIDA) is available to the students of BEng (Hons) in Electrical Engineering.
Artificial intelligence and data analytics (AIDA) are the most prevailing technologies across various disciplines, and have become a de-facto standard approach to enrich business, advance technology and achieve breakthroughs in virtually all fields. The Secondary Major in Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics (AIDA) enables students to integrate AIDA skills into the study of BEng (Hons) in Electrical Engineering and provides an opportunity for detailed study in a choice of related specialist areas.
Studying for a Secondary Major is a free choice by students and not mandatory. Only students with a cumulative GPA of 2.7 or above may be considered for Secondary Major enrolment. This Secondary Major may stipulate additional selection criteria for admission and is subject to quota availability. Students must apply to and obtain approval from the Department of Electrical Engineering, not later than the commencement of the second year of study, to be admitted to the Secondary Major.
Re-accreditation will be sought from the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) for the BEng (Hons) in Electrical Engineering and BEng (Hons) in Transportation Systems Engineering programmes.
BEng (Hons) in Electrical Engineering graduates have numerous employment opportunities in engineering planning and design, manufacturing, installation, maintenance and servicing, engineering sales and research. Graduates are able to develop rewarding careers in major utility and transportation companies such as CLP Power Hong Kong Limited, the Hongkong Electric Company Limited and the MTR Corporation Limited. They are also employed by engineering consultant firms, contractor companies, international engineering enterprises, electrical product manufacturers and the Government of the HKSAR.
BEng (Hons) in Transportation Systems Engineering graduates are expected to receive attractive offers from various government departments, public and private transportation service providers, civil, electrical and transportation engineering consultancies, and construction companies. They are well equipped to work in Hong Kong, Mainland China and overseas.
