  • Students will be awarded one of the following awards upon successful completion of the graduation requirements of the programme concerned: 
    • BEng (Hons) in Electrical Engineering
    • BEng (Hons) in Transportation Systems Engineering
  • Students admitted to the Scheme complete a common curriculum in Year 1. They are allowed to enrol on one of the honours degree programmes without being subject to further assessment and can begin studying the content relevant to their path from Semester One of Year 2.
  • The option of Secondary Major in AI and Data Analytics is available to the students of BEng (Hons) in Electrical Engineering.  Admission to the Secondary Major is on competitive basis and subject to a different credit requirement for graduation. Please see "Secondary Major Details" section.

Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes

The BEng (Hons) Scheme in Electrical Engineering consists of the following degrees. It aims to give students the flexibility to decide on the final degree in their study.

  • BEng (Hons) in Electrical Engineering provides in-depth coverage of electrical engineering based on an outcome-based education philosophy. The programme produces engineers who are able to practise their professions in a wide range of areas of electrical engineering, such as electrical power systems, energy conversion and utilisation, transportation systems, environmental protection, control, and computer and fibre-optic applications.

    A modern electrical engineer should possess a broad-based education and the specialist knowledge needed to undertake high-level work in design, planning, supervision and manufacturing. The programme thus places emphasis on the mastery of both fundamental principles and the application of latest engineering technology. Of equal importance is training in leadership, entrepreneurship, and communication skills.  

    We encourage lifelong learning to enable graduates to keep abreast of new developments in engineering and technology.
     

  • BEng (Hons) in Transportation Systems Engineering aims to make full use of the hugely versatile applications of the in-demand disciplines of electrical engineering to broaden the career opportunities available to our graduates. Students are expected to acquire a solid understanding of the fundamentals of electrical engineering, and apply the knowledge gained and techniques learned to relevant areas in the field of transportation systems.

    The programme philosophy focuses on the incorporation of up-to-date engineering knowledge into transportation systems to enhance the efficiency, reliability, safety and maintainability of infrastructure and services. Current practices in transportation, the latest technologies in transportation systems and integrating them to provide engineering solutions to practical problems form the core of the programme.
     

Programme Characteristics

BEng (Hons) in Electrical Engineering is one of the premier electrical engineering degree programmes in Hong Kong that provides unique and up-to-date education in electrical power and energy. The curriculum is designed to give a balanced treatment of university core requirements, electrical engineering fundamentals, advanced and specialist topics, and non-technical subjects such as management. 

 

BEng (Hons) in Transportation Systems Engineering is unique in Hong Kong, providing students with interdisciplinary knowledge and perspectives in modern transportation systems and a direct career path into the high-growth transportation industry and related sectors.

 

Engineering practice is an integrated component of the curriculum. Student learning is supplemented by a variety of laboratory, training and project activities. Students also develop good presentation and problem-solving skills through mini-projects and final-year projects. Students are required to take the Work-Integrated Education (WIE) component, which may be in the form of summer training or industrial attachment.

 

Students can also participate in exchange programmes and spend a semester at an overseas university. Every year, a number of students participate in exchange programmes with institutions including Cardiff University, National University of Singapore, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Technical University of Munich and Czech Technical University.
 

Engineering and Entrepreneurship Club (E&E Club) provides a platform to enhance students’ interests in engineering and understanding of entrepreneurship. E&E Club organises workshops to train students’ technical skills and invites experts to share requirements of entrepreneurship with students. It also supports students participating in both local and overseas underwater robot competitions. 

 

Seminars, industry visits and overseas study tours are also organised to broaden students’ horizons.

Curriculum

Curriculum

  • The Year One curriculum focuses on fundamental studies, such as physics, mathematics, languages, information technology and general education.
  • The Year Two curriculum focuses on the fundamentals of engineering science, engineering mathematics, engineering economics, computing and introductory studies of electrical engineering.

 

BEng (Hons) in Electrical Engineering

  • In Year Three, students follow a semi-structured study pattern by taking compulsory core subjects in electrical engineering and elective subjects. The focus is on consolidating the fundamentals and developing teamwork and experimental skills. Discipline-specific language subjects are also studied.
  • Students take advanced core subjects and elective subjects and carry out final year projects. Final year projects provide a comprehensive experience of learning engineering technology, problem-solving techniques, communication skills (both written and verbal) and creative thinking. Depending on their career aspirations and specialisations, students can choose from a list of electives to complement their knowledge in different areas of electrical engineering.

 

BEng (Hons) in Transportation Systems Engineering

  • In Year Three, essential knowledge of transportation systems, such as system analysis, planning, and technical subjects from various engineering disciplines, is provided. Discipline-specific language subjects are also studied.

  • During their final year, students take four core subjects in transportation systems and one elective subject covering advanced or specialised topics related to transportation. Students may choose individual projects that are relevant to transportation systems engineering.

Secondary Major Details

The option of Secondary Major in Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics (AIDA) is available to the students of BEng (Hons) in Electrical Engineering.

Features

Artificial intelligence and data analytics (AIDA) are the most prevailing technologies across various disciplines, and have become a de-facto standard approach to enrich business, advance technology and achieve breakthroughs in virtually all fields. The Secondary Major in Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics (AIDA) enables students to integrate AIDA skills into the study of BEng (Hons) in Electrical Engineering and provides an opportunity for detailed study in a choice of related specialist areas.

Remarks

Studying for a Secondary Major is a free choice by students and not mandatory. Only students with a cumulative GPA of 2.7 or above may be considered for Secondary Major enrolment. This Secondary Major may stipulate additional selection criteria for admission and is subject to quota availability. Students must apply to and obtain approval from the Department of Electrical Engineering, not later than the commencement of the second year of study, to be admitted to the Secondary Major.

Re-accreditation will be sought from the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) for the BEng (Hons) in Electrical Engineering and BEng (Hons) in Transportation Systems Engineering programmes.

 

Career Prospects

BEng (Hons) in Electrical Engineering graduates have numerous employment opportunities in engineering planning and design, manufacturing, installation, maintenance and servicing, engineering sales and research. Graduates are able to develop rewarding careers in major utility and transportation companies such as CLP Power Hong Kong Limited, the Hongkong Electric Company Limited and the MTR Corporation Limited. They are also employed by engineering consultant firms, contractor companies, international engineering enterprises, electrical product manufacturers and the Government of the HKSAR.

BEng (Hons) in Transportation Systems Engineering graduates are expected to receive attractive offers from various government departments, public and private transportation service providers, civil, electrical and transportation engineering consultancies, and construction companies. They are well equipped to work in Hong Kong, Mainland China and overseas.

I chose PolyU EE not only because of its excellent reputation for ground-breaking innovation, but also because the Department is dedicated to providing high-quality engineering education. 

 

Through lectures, I enriched my knowledge of Electrical Engineering. From basic electronics to the power system, and from electric vehicles to fibre optics, I gained insights into various fields in my discipline. This not only broadened my horizons but also enabled me to take advantage of the latest technology and become better equipped for my future career. The teaching staff in PolyU EE are willing to share their precious knowledge and experience with students. They always welcome questions from students.  

 

Various opportunities are offered to consolidate the knowledge acquired during lectures and to apply theories to solve real-life problems. I joined the Chengdu study tour in Year 3, which gave me rich exposure to new technologies, such as a high-speed railway. I also joined the MATE competition in 2018, which gave me the chance to apply the knowledge I had acquired in lectures to real-life applications. 

 

As a fresh graduate in Electrical Engineering, I wish to give my heartfelt thanks to my department for its efforts to nurture new talents in Electrical Engineering.


WU Ka Kit



PolyU’s Department of Electrical Engineering offers one of the best engineering programmes in Hong Kong. The well-structured curriculum and professional technical training equipped me with the skills and knowledge I needed to start my engineering career. During my training, I gained hands-on experience in the well-equipped Industrial Centre at PolyU, including industrial safety training. The courses offered by the Department of Electrical Engineering often include laboratory sessions, which familiarise students with the equipment and allow us to test out some theories. We were also encouraged by the University to join internship and exchange programmes. This allowed me to gain solid experience in addition to lectures. 

 

It was an awesome journey at PolyU. You can find great friends and supportive faculty members there. The University values all-round development, and so provides students with leadership training and General Education courses. There is a unique programme called Service-Learning, which allowed me to apply my skills and knowledge to serve society. Studying Electrical Engineering at PolyU made me a more competitive and valuable employee. It was a wonderful experience.


WONG Sui Man



I joined the Electrical Engineering programme mainly because I saw various related career opportunities and paths in Hong Kong. In this programme, I have acquired fundamental knowledge and hands-on experience. Attending the technical seminars provided by the Department helps me keep pace with the latest developments in the global engineering industry. I am confident that I will become a successful and professional engineer in the future.

 

In addition to studying, students have opportunities to take part in various activities. I joined a study tour at South West Jiaotong University. During this trip, I made some new friends and encountered new ideas, culture, interests and experiences. This opened my eyes and changed my mindset, ultimately giving me a better understanding of engineering.


WONG Chak Shing



I have been enthusiastic about public transportation since I was young, so I chose Transportation Systems Engineering as my undergraduate Major. The curriculum of this four-year programme covers railway and highway system infrastructure and transportation systems planning, among other things.

 

In addition to attending lectures, we also undertook practical training at the Industrial Centre during the summer after our second year of study. Simulated working environments and problem-based practical exercises were provided, which gave us the opportunity to apply the knowledge and techniques we had learned during lectures and provided hands-on experience in practical work related to transportation engineering.

 

The Department also offers study tours and exchange programmes to students. I participated in a study tour to South West Jiaotong University and learned about high-speed railway development in China.

 

The Department has excellent facilities and provides exciting opportunities for undergraduate students to become proficient professionals in transportation or related fields. It has helped me take a big step forward towards my dream career.


PUN Man Hin



Transportation System Engineering in the Department of Electrical Engineering at PolyU offers students a route into the transportation and electrical engineering industry. This programme mainly covers the planning and management of transportation systems and also provides some basic electrical knowledge in areas such as power transmission and distribution. Both academic and practical training are provided to students in the four-year curriculum. What impressed me the most was the industrial training, which included electrical installation practice and lighting and electrical system design in simulated work environments. This hands-on experience equipped me with the skills and knowledge I needed in my career journey.

 

The EE department also offers a study tour every year. I participated in the study tour to South West Jiaotong University in Chengdu in 2016. I also had the chance to work at MTR Corporation Limited in 2018 as a summer intern. I worked in the system integration team in the E&M Construction Department on its Shatin Central Link project and learned about the complex relationships between the elements involved in developing a new railway line.  


CHAN Ying Yu



Life is full of challenges! I enjoyed my fruitful university life studying Transportation Systems Engineering in the Department of Electrical Engineering at PolyU. I learned some modern transportation technologies, calculated a simplified traffic signal timing plan and modelled a transport assignment to achieve an efficient transportation system. In addition, I gained a lot of experience writing programs and improved my problem-solving skills in an elective course, “Intelligent Transportation Systems” – a useful course for building my career. 

 

In addition to always striving for the best academically, I love to get involved in various co-curricular activities. I joined Beijing and Sichuan study tours in the summer. These were valuable opportunities to extend my horizons to learn about some large transportation projects; for example, we visited a highway construction site in Sichuan. I had a great time with my friends on the trips!

 

These valuable opportunities provided me with great memories and connections. I think that my internship at HAECO and my final-year project, Visualization and Data Analysis in the Hangzhou Bike System, enabled me to pursue a career as a data analyst after graduation.
