Student Message

Student Message

Immersing myself in this social work programme has been the most inspiring and fulfilling experience of my life. During these four years, I have met countless encouraging professors, tutors, and fieldwork supervisors. They have generously shared their practical wisdom with me in lectures, seminars, lab sessions and placements, as well as imparting valuable theories and values related to social work.

Lectures equipped me with fundamental conceptual knowledge of the social work profession, enabling me to carry out assessments and plan interventions for service users. During numerous discussions in seminars, I enhanced my critical thinking ability and was able to reflect in depth on social issues. I was encouraged to practise and hone various micro-skills to foster effective communication with clients. Placement opportunities enabled me to apply what I had acquired in the classroom in real settings, taking cultural factors into considerations.

Generally, this four-year programme has given me theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and, most importantly, the professional values and beliefs as a social worker. This has all prepared me to become a social work practitioner who is ready to do my bit to make people’s lives better.

HA Hiu Man Charlotte

I spent the last four years at PolyU and made dozens of memories. I am delighted to have been part of this big, warm family. Not only did I learn a lot from the lectures and seminars but I also gained a lot beyond the classroom. All of the guidance and support I received from professors, departmental staff, and my buddies at PolyU made me a better person. APSS also gave me numerous opportunities for self-development, both local and outbound.

I had already achieved more than I had expected before I embarked on my university career. In my freshman year, I made a group of friends in the departmental society, with whom I spent lots of time and organised activities. I had the chance to explore more opportunities by completing a student exchange in Seoul a year later, followed by an outbound placement in Taiwan. In my last year of study, apart from completing my capstone thesis, I entered a competition on policy entrepreneurship with my classmates. We learned and experienced entirely new things. Without this experience and these opportunities, I would never have become the mature person that I am today. That is why I wish to thank everyone that I met in my four years at PolyU.
